On the back of winning three banners at zones last week, the Stonewall Collegiate Institute Rams put up a good show at Manitoba High Schools Association’s Provincial Badminton Championships in Brandon on May 4 and 5.

SCI’s Chris Wiebe obtained a silver medal in the boys’ singles category, while Justin Levesque and Ethan Lindsay received bronze in the boys’ doubles category.
Wiebe won all six of his group stage matches on May 4, securing his place in the playoff round.

He beat Hassan Ashraf 21-9, 21-9, Eric Martin 21-12, 21-19 and Avery Dick 19, 21, 21-11, 21-14 to secure his place in the final match.
Wiebe went head-to-head against his doubles partner Jeevan Khanuja in the final, losing 23-25, 15-21.  His record was 10 (of 11) match wins and 13 (of 16) game wins.

The SCI student will be back in action at the 2018 Yonex U23 and Junior National Championships in Burlington, ON on May 14 to 19. Wiebe will play in the U19 boys’ doubles category with Khanuja.

Levesque and Lindsay fell short of top spot with a bronze medal, but had a successful campaign, winning nine of the 11 matches  and 12 of the 15 games they played.

In the boys’ doubles C group stage, Levesque and Lindsay won all but one match. They lost 21-15 to Nicolas Dizengremel and Alexandre Poudrier. In their first play off game, the team defeated Kevin Dunn and Baily Last 21-14 and 11-21. In their next match- a repeat of their zone championship match- the team faced Teulon Collegiate Institute Saints Ryan Hill and Austin Persoage.

The Stonewall duo came out with a 24-22, 21-11 win. Their only loss of the playoff round (8-21, 13-21) was to eventual provincial champions Sam Larson and Allan Liu. In the bronze medal game, Levesque and Lindsay defeated David King and Murphy Krentz.
