Rams, Wildcats win badminton zone banners

The Stonewall Collegiate Institute Rams won championship banners in three of five badminton categories at zones on home court April 24 and 25. The Warren Collegiate Institute Wildcats managed to win one category, while the Lundar Kodiaks captured another.


Stonewall’s Chris Wiebe beat Arborg Collegiate Institute’s Connor Yarema to win the gold medal game in the boys’ singles category. Scott Yeo, also from SCI was defeated by Yarema, taking the bronze medal.


In the girls’ singles, Emalia Sinclair from Warren Collegiate Institute captured gold, after defeating Gimli High School’s Jayda. ACI’s Morgan Melnychuk captured the bronze to the GHS player.


Sarah Fines and Loren Proven from SCI where in top form, capturing the girls’ doubles gold medal. They beat Alex Chester and Grace Goodman from WCI, who took home silver.


In the boys’ doubles final, the Rams won another gold, courtesy of Justin Levesque and Ethan Lindsay-Corbel.


They beat Teulon Collegiate Institute’s Austin Persoage and Ryan Hill to capture the banner. In 2017, fellow TCI players Jake Ledochowski and Mark Shimmie won the provincial banner in this category.


In the mixed doubles round, Callie and Ryan took gold for the Lundar Kodiaks, while Hunter and Dante received bronze for the Rams. The final  scores were unavailable at press time.
 

Provincials next
Top teams from each category will participate in this year’s Manitoba High Schools  Athletic Association’s Provincial Badminton Championships in Brandon on May 4 and 5. The draw for the tournament was unavailable at press time. Highlights from the last year’s provincial championships include TCI athletes coming away with the best team aggregate for the third year straight.
