Two inmates who escaped from Stony Mountain Institution’s minimum-security unit on Feb. 24 are back in custody.

Early Tuesday morning, Feb. 27, RCMP received information the pair were in the Osborne area of Winnipeg. They were located and arrested without incident.

Now, 21-year-old William Benjamin Hunter-Garrioch and 34-year-old Dale Jacob Gilchrist have been remanded into custody and are facing charges of Being Unlawfully at Large and returned to Stony Mountain Institution.

Stonewall RCMP were notified of the missing men around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 after both were absent from a head count. A search of the area did not turn up either of the men.

The Correctional Service of Canada said arrest warrants were then issued.

Hunter-Garrioch was serving a sentence of over nine years for attempted murder, possession of a weapon and possession of a schedule II substance.

Gilchrist was serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery and possession of property obtained by crime. CSC also said they will investigate how the two men escaped the prison, located on Highway 7.
