The Lord Selkirk Royals varsity girls’ cross country team finished second in Kilcona Peguis Athletic Conference results.
Fleetfooted Tonie Sledz led the 24 varsity girls around the four kilometre course at Birds Hill Provincial Park Oct. 4.
Sledz, who has been leading the Royals this season won the race by 40 seconds.
“I feel confident going into provincials,” Sledz said.
Following close on the heels of Slez were Royals athletes Alexa Scott (4th), Asha Gurney (5th), and Charlotte Wilmot (10th). And not far behind for the Royals were Kate Jessop (13th) and Lily Robertson (19th).
“We had four in the top 10 and five in the top 13. It was a really nice run for the girls. They clumped up during the race and tried to run together as long as they could,” Royals head coach Scott Gurney said. “this was higher quality race than the last one.”
Three runners from the Selkirk Comp represented the Royals in the junior varsity girls race. Finishing in ninth place was international student Lucia Garcia. Lea Girard crossed the finish line in 23rd and Clara Poza finished 25.
On the boys side, it was Will Miller, who represented the Royals in the varsity boys race and he placed 11th. Heath Kurys lead the Royals in the junior varsity boys race as he placed third. Following Kurys were Hunter Gaborieau (8th), Jamie Adnerson (14th) and Terrence Tonj (20th.
The Royals competed at the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Provincial Cross Country Championships at Kilcona Park Oct. 11. Final results were not available by press time.
