Athletics, Lakers win in girls and boys varsity volleyball tournaments

Arborg Collegiate Institute’s Athletics boys volleyball team and the Gimli High School Lakers girls volleyball team were in top form during two tournaments Sept. 29.


The Athletics boys team was in action at Riverton Collegiate Institute, quickly getting ahead of the pack in pool play. They beat the Charles Sinclair Hawks 25-18,25-23, the Minegoziibe Anishinabe Talons 25-21,25-19, but lost 22-25,18-25 to the Immanuel Christian Falcons.


The team then faced the Lac Du Bonnet Chargers, beating them 25-12 in the first set, losing 23-25 in the second and winning 15-13 in the last set. Arborg booked its place in the final match, dismantling the Falcons 25-20, 26-24 in their second tournament encounter, to take the win.


Hosts Riverton were beaten in the quarter final round by the Chargers 27-25, 25-17, ending their tournament run.


Away from home in Arborg, the Lakers girls team was victorious in a tournament Sept. 29.


In pool play, Gimli won both their games beating Charles Sinclair 25-12, 25-11and Powerview 25-17,25-19. In the other pool, the Athletics won both their games beating Riverton 25-22, 25-18, and the Talons 25-10, 25-18.

In the quarterfinal matches the Athletics lost 25-15, 25-9 to Powerview, while the Lakers beat Riverton 25-10, 25-9. In the final Gimli lost the first set 23-25, before bouncing back in the last two sets 25-17, 15-7 for the win.

Fisher Branch takes tourney loss
The Fisher Branch Collegiate Cougars boys varsity volleyball team came home without silverware after participating in the MacGregor Sr Boys Volleyball tournament Invitational at MacGregor Collegiate Sept. 30.


During pool play, the Cougars beat the River River Rams 25-12,25-12, but lost 23-25,14-25 to the host Mustangs, 20-25, 14-25 to the Teherne Tigers and 6-25, 8-25 to the Westpark Royals.

They finished third in their pool, securing a place in the consolation play-off. Fisher Branch were beaten 23-25, 25-21 and 16-14 by eventual consolation champions, the Carberry Cougars.
