Stony Mountain inmate taken to hospital by STARS

An 28-year-old male inmate was transported to hospital in Winnipeg by STARS air ambulance following an assault at Stony Mountain Institution on Sunday evening.

The maximum security inmate was found to have injuries consistent with having been assaulted at around 6:40 p.m. RCMP spokesperson said he was transported to hospital in stable condition by STARS air ambulance shortly after 7:14 p.m., following what is believed to be a stabbing.

RCMP said his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

The investigation is continuing by the RCMP and Correctional Service Canada spokesperson said the incident is also the subject of a CSC investigation.

Stony Mountain Institution federal penitentiary is located about 18 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
