The Provincial Girls 'A' Basketball Championship kicked off in Fisher Branch on March 17, with 10 teams from across the province coming from as far away as Churchill and from as close as St. Laurent.
Opening ceremonies began at 4:00 p.m. in the Fisher Branch Collegiate gymnasium, after the start of the games earlier in the day.
A short Power Point presentation was shown by grade 12 student, Cory Dandeneau, as teams entered the darkened room one-by-one. Greetings were brought by John Zilkey as a representative of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA). Zilkey is also the Principal and a coach from the Hamiota Collegiate.
"High school athletics is the other half of education," Zilkey said.
Principal of the Fisher Branch Collegiate, Shaun Lindal, also addressed the players and guests and expressed great pride in them and in the work of the community for pulling it all together.
"If anyone wants a good community building opportunity, just host the Provincials. Everybody comes together," said Lindal.
Ethnic dancing by Fisher Branch's own Chaika Dancers followed speeches. They were invited in celebration of the community's strong Ukrainian Heritage. They put on an outstanding performance.
Each of the teams showed off during a basketball skills contest at the closing of the ceremonies. Each team had two minutes to shoot as many baskets as they could.
